Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic used as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Not technically a type of glass, it has been called acrylic glass. The material was developed in 1928 under the trademark Plexiglas®. Acrylic has since been sold under many different names, including Acrylite® and Lucite®. Polycarbonate is a durable, high impact-resistance material ("referred to as bullet proof"), that is highly transparent to visible light, with better light transmission than many kinds of glass, but has a low scratch-resistance. Polycarbonates is known by the trademarked names Lexan, Makrolon, Makroclear, arcoPlus® and others.
